The Second Session in New Orleans

February 24, 2009 by alterglobalizations
The aim of the second session will be to have a panel discussion around a research thematic that will be determined shortly. As the conference will take place in New Orleans issues pertaining to local issues will be prioritized. There will be a call for papers shortly and selected authors will be asked to post their papers prior to our meeting in New Orleans. A discussant will then summarize the common thematics during the panel discussion.

The First Session in New Orleans

February 24, 2009 by alterglobalizations
The aim of the first session is to encourage and develop a more comprehensive, inter-disciplinary and challenging understanding and activism to challenge existing globalization theorizations and practices. The session will be facilitated by Barry Gills and Hasmet M. Uluorta. The session does not involve paper presentations nor is it a panel discussion. As one of the sponsored ’Innovative Panels’ this session seeks to provide a diverse grouping of researchers with the opportunity to meet, discuss and build networks of solidarity and activism. Topics of research may include but are not limited to: food (in)security, financial crises, the World Social Forum along with local, national and regional variants; NGOs; and protests; global civil society; cultural resistances; defense of the commons; social justice; the social economy; open source initiatives; labour rights and international financial institution reform. So what will we do? Participants will be given an opportunity to meet one-on-one and in small groups to discuss their research and activism. Break-out groups will be formed to discuss core research and activist thematics and to strategize potential agendas. Facilitators will structure this meeting to ensure that participants have ample opportunity to meet and present their research projects with one another.
